Gauri Vrat 2025: A Sacred Fast of Devotion and Discipline

Gauri Vrat, also known as Morakat Vrat or Jaya Parvati Vrat, is a five-day sacred observance primarily followed by unmarried girls in Gujarat and parts of western India. It honors Goddess Parvati (Gauri) and her unwavering devotion to attain Lord Shiva as her consort.

Tithi & Observance (2025)

  • Start Date: Sunday, 6 July 2025 (Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi)
  • End Date: Thursday, 10 July 2025 (Guru Purnima)
  • Ekadashi Tithi Begins: 6 July, 2025
  • Ekadashi Tithi Ends: 7 July, 2025

The vrat spans five days, concluding on Guru Purnima, a day that also honors spiritual teachers.

Significance

  • Symbolizes Goddess Parvati’s penance to win Lord Shiva’s love.
  • Observed by unmarried girls to seek a virtuous, loving husband.
  • Married women may also observe it for marital harmony and family well-being.
  • Encourages discipline, purity, and spiritual focus in young girls.

Legends

Two popular legends are associated with Gauri Vrat:

1.     Parvati’s Tapasya: Parvati, born as a royal princess, renounced luxury and performed intense austerities to win Lord Shiva’s heart. Her devotion moved Shiva, who accepted her as his eternal consort.

2.     The Brahmin Couple: A childless couple worshipped a hidden Shiva Linga in the forest. When the husband was bitten by a snake, the wife’s heartfelt prayers revived him. Their devotion pleased Lord Shiva, who blessed them with a son.
