Guruvayur Ekadasi 2025 – Date, Significance & Observance

Guruvayur Ekadasi is one of the most sacred festivals celebrated at the Sri Krishna Temple in Guruvayur, Kerala. In 2025, it falls on Monday, December 1st, coinciding with Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi, also known as Mokshada Ekadashi.

Spiritual Significance

  • Commemorates the day Lord Vishnu revealed the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna.
  • Observed as a day of liberation (moksha) and spiritual awakening.
  • Believed to be the day the idol of Guruvayurappan was installed, making it especially sacred for devotees.

Rituals & Temple Observance

  • The Guruvayur Temple remains open continuously from Dasami morning to Dwadashi evening, a rare exception to its usual schedule.
  • Ekadasi Vilakku: A grand procession with decorated elephants and oil lamps takes place after the night pooja.
  • Devotees observe strict fasting, chant Vishnu Sahasranama, and participate in Gita Parayanam.
  • Dwadashi Parana: Fast is broken the next day after sunrise, ideally by visiting a Vishnu temple.

Regional Observance

  • In Kerala, Guruvayur Ekadasi is the Vrischika Ekadasi, deeply rooted in the Malayalam calendar.
  • In other regions, it aligns with Mokshada Ekadashi, observed with similar rituals but less emphasis on the temple installation legend.
