Guruvayur Ekadasi
is one of the most sacred festivals celebrated at the Sri Krishna Temple in
Guruvayur, Kerala. In 2025, it falls on Monday, December 1st,
coinciding with Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi, also known as Mokshada
Ekadashi.
Spiritual Significance
- Commemorates the day Lord Vishnu
revealed the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna.
- Observed as a day of liberation
(moksha) and spiritual awakening.
- Believed to be the day the idol of
Guruvayurappan was installed, making it especially sacred for
devotees.
Rituals & Temple
Observance
- The Guruvayur Temple remains open
continuously from Dasami morning to Dwadashi evening, a rare
exception to its usual schedule.
- Ekadasi Vilakku:
A grand procession with decorated elephants and oil lamps takes
place after the night pooja.
- Devotees observe strict fasting,
chant Vishnu Sahasranama, and participate in Gita Parayanam.
- Dwadashi Parana:
Fast is broken the next day after sunrise, ideally by visiting a Vishnu
temple.
Regional Observance
- In Kerala, Guruvayur Ekadasi
is the Vrischika Ekadasi, deeply rooted in the Malayalam calendar.
- In other regions, it aligns with Mokshada Ekadashi, observed with similar rituals but less emphasis on the temple installation legend.
