What is Hariyali Amavasya?

Hariyali Amavasya, also known as Sawan Amavasya, falls during the new moon day in the month of Shravan (Sawan). It is a festival that celebrates nature, fertility, and spiritual renewal, and is especially significant in North Indian states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana.

  • Celebrated during the monsoon, when greenery flourishes—hence the name Hariyali (greenery).
  • A day to honor Mother Earth, Lord Shiva, and ancestral spirits (Pitru).
  • Tree planting and environmental worship are central themes.

Religious Significance

  • Lord Shiva and Parvati are worshipped for marital harmony and prosperity.
  • Pitru Tarpan and Pind Daan are performed to honor ancestors and seek their blessings.
  • Tree worship (especially Peepal, Banyan, and Tulsi) is believed to bring peace, health, and spiritual merit.
  • The day is considered more auspicious than bathing in the Ganga on other Amavasyas.
