Significance of Sawan
Shivaratri
Sawan Shivaratri is one
of the most spiritually potent nights of the year, observed during the Krishna
Paksha Chaturdashi of the Shravan month, which is entirely dedicated
to Lord Shiva.
- Symbolizes the divine union
of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
- Commemorates the Samudra Manthan,
when Lord Shiva consumed the deadly Halahala poison to save the universe,
earning the name Neelkanth.
- Devotees seek blessings
for peace, prosperity, marital harmony, and liberation from karmic debts.
Rituals & Observances
1. Fasting (Vrat)
- Many observe a strict fast
(nirjala or phalahar), consuming only fruits, milk, or water.
- The fast is broken after the Nishita
Kaal puja or the next morning.
2. Shiva Puja
- Perform Abhishekam of the
Shiva Linga with:
- Milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar
(Panchamrit)
- Ganga Jal, rose water, and
sandalwood paste
- Offer Bilva leaves, white
flowers, dhatura, and fruits.
- Light a ghee lamp and incense
sticks.
3. Mantras & Chanting
- Chant:
- Om Namah Shivaya
- Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra
- Shiva Ashtottara Shatanamavali

4. Night Vigil (Jagaran)
- Stay awake through the night, singing
bhajans and meditating on Lord Shiva.
- Visit temples or join community satsangs if possible.
