Shravana Putrada Ekadashi 2025

  • Date: Tuesday, 5 August 2025
  • Ekadashi Tithi Begins: 11:41 AM on 4 August 2025
  • Ekadashi Tithi Ends: 1:12 PM on 5 August 2025

Significance

  • Putrada means “giver of sons.” This Ekadashi is especially observed by childless couples seeking blessings for progeny.
  • It is believed that fasting and worshipping Lord Vishnu on this day grants the boon of a virtuous child, especially a son, who can perform ancestral rites.
  • It is one of the two Putrada Ekadashis in the year—the other falls in Pausha month (December–January) and is more popular in North India.

Legends

King Mahijit’s Redemption (From Bhavishya Purana)

  • King Mahijit of Mahishmati was childless and distressed.
  • Sage Lomesh revealed that in a past life, Mahijit had committed a sin by driving away a thirsty cow and calf from a pond.
  • To atone, the sage advised him and his queen to observe Shravana Putrada Ekadashi.
  • They fasted, worshipped Lord Vishnu, and gave gifts to Brahmins.
  • Their wish was fulfilled—they were blessed with a son.
